Eye Conditions

Nearsightedness (myopia) -close objects are clear, but distant objects-such as a school blackboard, or a street sign are blurred and difficult to distinguish.

People who are nearsighted can have their vision corrected by several means, including, glasses, contact lenses, surgery, and laser surgery.

Farsightedness (hyperopia) - a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but close objects do not come into proper focus. People who are farsighted can have their vision corrected by glasses or contact lenses.

Astigmatism - A normal cornea is round and smooth like a baseball. With astigmatism, the cornea curves more severely, like a football. People who are astigmatic can have their vision corrected by several means, including, glasses, contact lenses, surgery, laser surgery and vision therapy.

Eyes Over 40 (presbyopia) - people with presbyopia can read street signs and watch movies comfortably, but they are unable to bring small print into focus. In fact, whereas farsightedness is caused by a misshapen eye, presbyopia is simply the result of the lens becoming less flexible. People who have presbyopia can have their vision corrected either by glasses or contact lenses.

Dry eye - the loss or reduction of the eye's normal ability to produce tears. There are three approaches to restoring the eyes' moisture. Minimize drying-avoid dry situations, such as an overheated room, wind. Add lubrication, use eye drops to add moisture directly to your eyes, or if wearing contact lenses, use rewetting drops. Conserve your own tears, Nashoba Vision Doctors can temporarily or permanently close the canals that drain tears from your eye to your nose.

Macular Degeneration - the leading cause of blindness in the United States in people over 50. It robs one of there central vision. Although it is seen predominantly in older individuals, it is driven by UV exposure and is now being seen in younger individuals. There is no cure for macular degeneration, but if caught early, recent studies showthat certain nutrients can slow progression.

Cataracts - a degenerative eye condition, in which the lens gradually becomes opaque and vision clouds over. While there is no way to prevent cataracts, there are several things you can do to limit or slow their formation. Yearly eye exams will help detect the onset of cataracts.

Glaucoma - often called "the thief in the night" as it starts slowly; exhibiting no symptoms at all until it has caused serious, irreversible damage. With early intervention you have a much better chance of preserving your vision.

Diabetes - the most common cause of blindness among working-aged people, and all people living with the disease should monitor their eye health carefully. On a routine eye exam at Nashoba Vision Associates, the the Doctor will not only exam the front of the eye, but also using Optomap retinal exam offered by Nashoba Vision we can provide a view of the back of the eye than has ever been previously possible. A digital record of the structures will now become part of your perminant record. Therefore we can monitor your eye health.
